Attendees of the ATS 2026 International Conference will be able to hear directly from authors of some of the most impactful recent papers in the fields of pulmonary health and critical care during two Scientific Symposium sessions: the “JAMA/NEJM/AJRCCM Pulmonary Session,” from 11:15 a.m.–1:15 p.m., and “AJRCCM/NEJM/JAMA Critical Care Session,” from 2:15–4:15 p.m., on Monday, May 18, in the Chapin Theater (Level III, OCCC West Concourse, W320).
For each session, a review committee and editors of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (AJRCCM), the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) have selected recently published papers to spotlight.

“The senior editorial committee spends considerable time selecting the most impactful manuscripts from the large number we publish,” explained Andrew Bush, MD, ATSF, who will chair one of the joint sessions.
During these sessions, the authors of these papers will present their findings and engage with the audience to answer questions and delve into the details of their methodology and results.
“A good presentation will inspire young investigators. The presenter will show the importance of the question and how they went about solving it. The best papers lead to further questions, and it is hoped that young investigators will be stimulated to try to crack them. They will also hopefully be stimulated to read the full paper and see what a top manuscript looks like and how to craft it,” said Dr. Bush, a professor of pediatrics and pediatric respirology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, and Imperial Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health, Imperial College, London.
Dr. Bush also noted that the sessions are designed to inspire new papers that meet the journals’ high standards of publication.
“We aim to highlight the sort of papers we are publishing and attract the best manuscripts going forward by showcasing the Journal,” Dr. Bush said. “Increasing the profile of AJRCCM and building on past success is a key reason we do this.”
The AJRCCM is part of a robust family of ATS journals. The Society also publishes the American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology, which presents papers that report significant and original observations in the area of pulmonary biology; the Annals of the American Thoracic Society, which aims to educate pulmonary, sleep, and critical care providers about clinical care and publishes commentary on public health, environmental health, global health, and health policy relevant to ATS members; and ATS Scholar, which disseminates high-quality scholarship related to education and training to optimize patient care for those with respiratory diseases, sleep disorders, and critical illnesses.
