Pre-Conference Early Career Programs Uplift the Next Generation of Respiratory Health Leaders

4 minutes

The ATS prioritizes preparing the next generation of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine professionals to excel in their chosen fields while keeping them informed about the latest technologies, scientific discoveries, and guidelines. The Early Career Programs (ECP) at the ATS 2025 International Conference are pre-conference events that offer students and young professionals the opportunity to attend educational programs, resources, and networking opportunities to set them up for future success.

Each course will be hosted at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Attendees who wish to participate in one of the following pre-conference courses must enroll separately in addition to their overall conference registration. The application deadline for these programs is today, Friday, Feb. 21.

Student Scholars Program

The Student Scholars Program, hosted May 16 – 18,  is a unique opportunity for a select group of 80-100 motivated individuals currently enrolled in or applying to undergraduate school, graduate school, respiratory therapy training, nursing school, and medical school. The custom curriculum is designed to expose students to cutting-edge science, professional education, and focused career development opportunities. Applicants selected for the Student Scholars Program will also be offered free registration to this year’s International Conference.

To be eligible for this program, applicants MUST:

  • Be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate, graduate, respiratory therapy, nursing, and medical school OR preparing to submit/currently submit an application to an accredited medical, graduate, or respiratory therapy school.
  • Have an interest in learning more about a medical OR research career in adult or pediatric pulmonary diseases (including processes that affect lung development, injury, or repair), critical care, or sleep.

For questions, please contact Liz Guzman, Director of Professional Development, Learning Programs, ATS, [email protected].

Resident Boot Camp

The ATS Resident Boot Camp, May 16 – 17, is a two-day course for internal medicine and pediatric residents (as well as chief residents and hospitalists) who are matched into a fellowship program for July 2025.

The Boot Camp prepares fellows entering an adult or pediatric pulmonary or critical care fellowship with the information, confidence, and knowledge needed to flourish on the first day of fellowship. The course will include large and small group breakouts and hands-on workshops.

This program recruits the best faculty from across the country to teach this course. For questions, please contact Lauren Lynch, Senior Director, Learning Programs, ATS, [email protected].

Fellows Track Symposium

The ATS Fellows Track Symposium, May 16 – 17, is open to up to 200 adult and pediatric fellows in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine to cover cutting-edge topics in the field of respiratory medicine.

This includes faculty presentations on clinical issues related to the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep disorders, including IPF, COPD, lung cancer, asthma, and sleep apnea. In addition, the Fellows Track Symposium will introduce a skills-based program that will highlight ultrasound, bronchoscopy, awake fiberoptic intubation, and more.

This year’s Fellows Track Symposium will again also include a pediatric track featuring faculty presentations relevant to a pediatric career in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine, such as asthma in children, pediatric cystic fibrosis, and pediatric hypertension.

For questions on the Fellows Track Symposium, please email [email protected].

New Faculty Boot Camp

The New Faculty Boot Camp, May 16 – 17, is designed for members in training, including sub-specialty clinical and research fellows in their last two years of training and PhD post-doctoral fellows in their last three years of training. In addition, early-career faculty within the first three years of their first faculty position are eligible to apply. Applicants should be active in basic, translational, or clinical research, medical education, or other academic roles in pulmonary, critical care, or sleep medicine. Participants will attend a two-day course featuring nationally recognized speakers sharing lessons to overcome the specific challenges faced during the transition from trainee to faculty.

The goal of the program is to equip participants with actionable strategies for navigating the challenging transition from clinical and research fellowships and PhD post-doctoral training to independent positions as academic faculty. Three main tracks are offered within the program to cater to specific careers: basic scientist, clinical scientist, and clinical educator. Track-specific and general interest sessions will be offered to build leadership and teaching skills, implement effective time-management strategies, and develop effective collaborations to accelerate bench-to-bedside research. To accomplish this, the New Faculty Boot Camp employs didactic lectures, interactive small-group discussions, and hands-on sessions.

Those considering applying to this Boot Camp should note that only applicants from U.S. or Canadian-based academic institutions will be considered. Applicants should also be active in basic, translational, or clinical research, medical education, or other academic roles in pulmonary, critical care, or sleep medicine.

For questions about the New Faculty Boot Camp, please contact Liz Guzman ([email protected]).
